Holiday Stress – Prepare and Enjoy The Season

By: Dr. Kyle Knox, DC CCSP.  Chiropractor in Westlake Village CA – Holiday Stress Every year the holidays are an amazing time to spend with family and friends.  It’s only natural with all the shopping and preparing, stress has a way of creeping into the situation.  If we accept that stress is coming and prepare for it, the season is much more enjoyable and we have less battle wounds going into the new year (IE extra weight, back pain, headaches).  Am I talking about ignoring grandma’s fudge, fun nights with friends, aunt Ester’s marshmallow surprise, or the extra few latte’s that comfort your morning?  I know for me it’s the important holiday pleasures that keep me excited about the season.  What we are talking about is moderation, continuing your exercise, and allowing time for stress relief. Moderation is a bit of a problem in the USA, but it seems to be ignored even more during the holidays.  Again this doesn’t mean we have to avoid family functions, but on the days after and before the big feasts, pay attention to portions and follow some sort of nutritional guidance.  If you do not have a nutritionist with basic guidelines for a balanced day, click here.  As touched on in this post, we are not running a race when it comes to diet and health.  Every day which leads to a healthier you is a victory.  Pat yourself on the back with every good day while running through the crossfire of pumpkin pie, rare roast beast, and the occasional half cap latte with extra foam. Exercise is essential to anyone looking...

Foam Rolling Benefits

By:   Dr. Kyle Knox, DC CCSP.  Chiropractor in Westlake Village CA.  Synergy Health Chiropractic Foam Rolling Benefits Foam rolling has been taking the scene of athletics by storm.  It is hard to find a sports Chiropractor, trainer, or physical therapist without finding this new cylindrical foam piece close at hand.  Throughout our day we are constantly creating tightness.  If it is poor posture at work, driving a car, riding a bike for hours at a time, running 3 miles or swimming 3,000 yards there are muscles and tissues that cause imbalances in our body.  Foam rolling allows us to flush out the muscles daily and lead us towards better posture. “Posture?  How does posture relate to muscle balance?” Muscles and spinal alignment have everything to do with posture.  Posture is essential to proper movement.  Think of trying to lift your arms over your head while hunched forward sitting.  It is almost impossible.  Now if you sit nice and tall and then do the same, your arms fly above your head.  If the spine or joints are not moving correctly or are in bad position, the muscles have no chance in doing their job correctly.  In turn if the muscles are over used and become tight, they restrict motion of the joints and irritate the nearby nervous system.  This is why foam rolling has become essential for home care or “Daily Healthy Habits.”  Home care is important for the hard core triathlete, office worker, weekend warrior, and everyone in between.  With the re-alignment of the spine and joints during Chiropractic care, the foam roller helps balance the muscles daily and...

Avoid the “Diet Mentality” with Healthy Eating

By: Bernadette Lueck, Conejo Valley Nutritionist and Diet Coach, Owner of Scaling Down Synergy Health Chiropractic Guest Blogger The holidays are looming, and it’s that time of year again: this is the season when many give in to the overabundance of sweets, comfort foods and alcohol, only to find themselves seriously overweight by the end of the year. But not to worry, January is the time for lofty weight loss resolutions and better health, right? And when spring and summer approach, the motivations are all the greater to “diet” and lose that unwanted weight, right? This approach to dieting can involve radical changes in our eating habits, and is often accompanied by a good deal of anxiety, personal discomfort and lots of frustration. I, too, used to embrace these ritualistic eating habits. I rode the diet roller coaster for several years. After a good deal of frustration, I made a conscious decision that I no longer wanted to be in the ranks of the overweight, and committed myself to finding a better way to lose my weight and get healthy. I found that weight loss is attainable through good, nutritionally sound eating and healthy living habits. (You can read my story on the “Press” page of my website). Adapting good eating habits and healthier living takes some time and effort, but brings vastly better quality to our lives. It not only brings weight loss, but greater energy levels, clearer thinking, healthier looks, and the confidence of knowing that you have habits that you can easily maintain your entire life. At the core of healthy eating and living is abandoning...
